10 Different Types of Roll Pallets and Their Use Cases
Table of Contents
Variety is the Spice of Life in the World of Pallets
Working in a warehouse environment with large, delicate, and valuable assets can be stressful. These assets need safe storage and transportation.
You’re already on this page, so you’ve probably heard of the roll pallet (or roll container) solution. Now you’re wondering which of these tall, metal, cage-like, wheeled containers is the best option for your company’s specific needs.
This list of ten different types of roll containers will give you all the information you need to make the right choice for your business and its own unique requirements.
1. Roll Pallets
There are a wide range of different options for roll pallets or roll cages. They are extremely versatile and at least one of them will suit your specific needs.
Each of the items on this list is a type of roll pallet and each of them comes with accessories and add-ons that make them unique.
The original sturdy roll pallet was designed to hold roll stock and cylindrical materials (e.g. paper, film, tape, metal, coil, fabric, or carpet). Cylindrical materials are much harder to store than other items that can fit in a box. Thus, roll pallets are necessary in warehouses that handle these types of items.
It enables workers to transport fragile, yet cumbersome, materials from one destination to the next while preserving them in their same form and condition. This reduces the amount of accidental damage and breakages sustained to products in storage and during transportation.
Nestable and demountable roll pallets are also great for transporting very heavy items as you can load them onto the pallet and roll them to where they need to be.
2. 3-Sided Roll Containers
Getting the storage and transport job done needs to be quick and effective to enhance business efficiency.
The humble 3-sided roll container is an excellent cage used within retail, food service, warehousing, logistics, hospitals, postal rooms, laundries, healthcare, airports, etc. The list goes on!
Fruit and vegetable suppliers in the food service industry, for example, often benefit from an A-frame, 3-sided roll cage.
Quick-release straps hold in and allow easy access to and distribution of food products. The narrow doors save space during storage. In addition, their nestability saves space too when they’re not in use.
Add-ons include two easily-detachable hinged or loose integral shelves for the segregation of products. Each has approximately 100 kg load capacity. These can be slid in and out depending on the size and shape of your food products.
3. 4-Sided Roll Containers
Versatile 4-sided roll containers can also be utilised in myriad industries, including laundry, healthcare, automotive, and recycling.
As with 3-sided roll pallets, the 4-sided ones are also nestable and slim to fit through tight doorways, e.g. in the office.
A handy feature of 4-sided roll containers is their lightness and noiselessness on floors. This makes them suitable for use in cold rooms or freezers with delicate, easily damageable flooring, for example. But although light, they are durable and manoeuvrable.
Check out Rory giving a product demo below:
Laundries can benefit from the meshed sides as they prevent smaller loads and items from spilling and falling out. Insertion and decanting are made easy with the wardrobe-style door and the tough hand grips.
Additionally, our 4-sided roll cages have a customizable ID plate on which you can stick or even emboss your company logo.
4. Jumbo Roll Containers
Now, what if you’re dealing with large and bulky products? Jumbo roll containers are constructed with high-quality steel, electro-zinc plating, and reinforced nylon castors, enhancing their robustness.
Your load capacity may be extremely heavy, especially in the hospitality and events industry, and in manufacturing organisations. Jumbo roll containers save time by carting up to 500 kg of parcels for distribution and other items in one go.
You can add solid, stainless steel rod infills to the sides and back, as well as ID plates to these heavy-duty contraptions. Additionally, you can add barcodes, RFID labels, and location trackers (IoT based) to your jumbo roll containers to keep track of them easily.
These containers have wire bases to help keep your parcels dust-free. They also make your items easy to access with a drop gate on one side.
5. Pallet Cages
Lightweight pallet cages are another option if you’re searching for temporary additional storage and transportation of sub-assembly warehouse parts. Small, medium and large items can all be protected from harm with fully-enclosed different-sized pallet cages.
As you know if you work in a warehouse, carrying heavy industrial equipment and appliances can have serious negative repercussions on the physical health of workers.
Some pallet cages have forklift skids (and all have positioning handles) for convenient mounting to forklifts. The half drop-down gates on one side are ideal for loading and decanting. Back problems and injuries for workers are a thing of the past!
Stackable, portable, and collapsible – all great qualities of a pallet cage. They should also have a long lifespan, durability, and enhanced load capacity.
6. Stillages
Maybe you require moving casks or heavy barrels of beer off the ground to and from (and within) your bar. Stillages are made with high-grade, bullet-proof steel with extreme industrial strength to withstand prolonged heavy force.
But bars aren’t the only enterprises for which stillages are designed. Stillages can be used in engineering, construction, manufacturing, and even recycling.
Any business owner’s ears would prick up at the words: “cost-effective”. Well, stillages are just that. These marvellous roll pallets have half-drop-down doors to reduce loading and unloading time.
Stillages are also extremely versatile. Pile them on top of each other whether full or empty to manage your floor space. Wheel them around or attach them to forklifts or pallet jacks. Install customised plates, Bluetooth, and GPS tracking systems. Anything goes!
7. Security Roll Pallets
Some companies require the safeguarding of high-value items such as small tools, electronics, perfume, alcohol, tobacco, excess baggage, stationary, and pharmaceuticals.
Security roll pallets are perfect for this task. For example, say you are shipping your items between destinations or keeping them within the workplace. Security roll pallets will keep your goods secure and protected.
This type of roll pallet has a reliable and robust steel design with various forms of security. It features reliable, lockable metal lids to prevent theft and protect the goods inside. Security roll pallets also have security seals, and GPS and IoT-based tracking options. You are able to track things such as when the pallet door opens and the ambient temperature of the pallet. This way, you can always monitor your goods carefully.
Other features of security cage include a mesh infill, additional loose shelves, company-label patches, and a full-opening hinged gate and lid.
8. Cash & Carry Trolleys
Cash & carry trolleys are open-plan trolleys with a rear basket for added convenient storage.
Attached to either the metal or wooden sprung plywood base are swivel castors so that you can steer with ease. Your company can choose between rubber or nylon wheels (both polyurethane). Both allow for durability and free, smooth movement on all kinds of nitty and gritty surfaces.
This type of roll pallet is excellent for small spaces where you need to load items on and off the trolley. For example, garden centres are enterprises that require this type of trolley for customers to roam around in tight spaces.
9. Furniture Cages
As the name suggests, furniture cages are designed for transporting furniture items. Large, bulky, sensitive furniture items need to be transported from A to B with care to avoid damage. Upholstered furniture can especially need delicate handling. These items can also be very heavy and difficult to move. So, in the furniture upholstery, merchandising, moving, stockist, and retail industry, specialist furniture cages are the go-to.
Furniture cages eliminate manual handling and lighten the load for workers who are in charge of storing and moving furniture items.
Rubber wheels or nylon castors allow for smooth sailing. In addition, wheel locks and package trolley flaps allow for operative efficiency.
This is another roll container that can be folded and stacked for increased storage capacity. You can stack furniture cages in low or high-bay racking. This makes them great for storing more items of furniture in your storage space. You can stack them on top of each other three units high.
10. Milk Cages
Last, but by no means least on our list, milk cages are also a specialised kind of roll container and are specifically designed for use in the dairy industry.
Dairy products are easily damageable. As such, they require gentle transportation from the distribution centre to the shop floor. Milk cages are your best choice if you work anywhere within the dairy industry.
Here’s Rory again with a product demo:
High load-capacity, removable, adjustable shelves allow for four levels of protected fresh milk and dairy products to be transported in one go. Pop-up shelves and a front gate also allow self-service customers to have easy access to your displayed products.
A milk cage is built with durable, high-tensile steel, and can be wheeled around on two fixed and two swivel nylon wheels.
